Moving resources with conveyor belts ain’t always the best option. In this guide, I will explain to you how to use Trains in Factorio.
Starting from the basics, there are two ways of structuring railways in Factorio, one-way railway or two-way railway. The two-way can be the easiest one at the starting but is not recommended if you are willing to expand it. The first one can cause some trouble while making it, however, is the recommended way of building railways. So, let’s see both ways.
Two way
In order to build a good two-way railway you have to:
- Make a roundabout so trains can easily invert the direction.
- Place at the starting a locomotive facing one direction and at the ending the other one facing the opposite direction.
Once you have decided, place where needed the “Train Stop” ( ). This will allow the Trains to know where to stop. Note that you can rename them.
Done that open the Train by clicking with LEFT MOUSE, and the Train configuration will open up. Here you can change where the train needs to stop and when the train can leave the station.
One way
As I just said one-way rail tracks are the bests and here is why. With one-way rail tracks you will have:
- Scalability: if one day you’ll need to expand the rail tracks you are going to be able to do it without worrying too much.
- Secure: Trains crashes are reduced since trains can be going only in one way.
- More trains can go at once.
As for the two-way rail tracks, you will need to place where needed “Train Stop” ( ). This will allow the Trains to know where to stop. Note that you can rename them.
Done that open the Train by clicking with LEFT MOUSE, and the Train configuration will open up. Here you can change where the train needs to stop and when the train can leave the station.
Intersection
Doing intersection if you are new can be nasty to deal with, but don’t worry I will guide you, just follow these simple steps:
- Place one “Rail Chain Signal” ( ) before every intersection.
- Place one “Rail Signal” ( ) at the very end of every intersection
- Never place a “Rail Chain Signal” next to a “Rail Signal”
With that being said I’m going to explain to you how to build a basic two-way intersection.
First of all, connect the railways. Secondly, place one “Rail Chain Signal” at the right of where the train should be coming. So for example, if the train is coming from up to the bottom put the signal on the left side of the railway. Lastly, put one “Rail Signal” at the very end of the intersection. Here are some pictures:
This is all about the basics of Factorio Trains. If something is missing or there is some error feel free to comment.
